Peripheral neuropathy has many possible causes, including diabetes, medication effects, nutritional problems, and nerve disease. Reduced sensation also raises the risk of unnoticed wounds.

- Numbness
- Burning or tingling
- Electric or shooting pain
- Reduced balance or protective sensation
What to expect during evaluation
The visit includes sensory, motor, reflex, skin, and circulation assessment. Laboratory testing, nerve studies, or referral may be recommended to evaluate the cause.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Protective foot-care education
- Footwear and fall-risk guidance
- Medication coordination
- Treatment of pressure points
- Referral for systemic evaluation when needed
