Understanding tarsal tunnel
Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve or its branches are compressed near the inside of the ankle. Similar symptoms may come from the back, neuropathy, or other nerve problems.
Common signs and symptoms
- Burning beneath the foot
- Tingling or numbness
- Shooting pain near the inner ankle
- Symptoms with prolonged standing
What to expect during evaluation
Evaluation includes sensory testing, nerve provocation, foot alignment, and assessment for masses or swelling. Imaging or nerve studies may be recommended.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Activity and footwear modification
- Orthotics
- Medication or injection when appropriate
- Treatment of an underlying mass or deformity
- Nerve decompression for selected persistent cases
