Understanding metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is a descriptive term for pain beneath the metatarsal heads rather than one specific diagnosis. The underlying cause may involve overload, toe deformity, joint inflammation, nerve irritation, a plantar plate injury, or stress injury.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain beneath the forefoot
- Burning or aching with walking
- Callus formation
- Pain during push-off
What to expect during evaluation
Evaluation includes pressure distribution, toe alignment, joint stability, gait, and weight-bearing X-rays to identify the underlying cause.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Footwear modification
- Metatarsal padding
- Custom orthotics
- Treatment of associated deformity
- Surgery when a structural cause remains disabling
