Understanding morton's neuroma

A Morton's neuroma is irritation and thickening of tissue around an interdigital nerve, most commonly between the third and fourth toes. It is not a true nerve tumor. Tight shoes and forefoot loading often worsen symptoms.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Burning pain in the ball of the foot
  • Tingling into the toes
  • A pebble-in-the-shoe sensation
  • Pain in tight footwear

What to expect during evaluation

The examination localizes nerve tenderness and checks for other causes of forefoot pain. Ultrasound or MRI is used selectively.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Wider footwear
  • Metatarsal padding
  • Custom orthotics
  • Injection therapy
  • Nerve decompression or removal for persistent cases
