Understanding haglund's deformity
Haglund's deformity is a bony prominence at the back of the heel that can irritate footwear, the nearby bursa, and the Achilles tendon insertion. Treatment depends on which structure is causing symptoms.
Common signs and symptoms
- A prominent bump behind the heel
- Pain in closed-back shoes
- Redness or swelling
- Tenderness at the Achilles insertion
What to expect during evaluation
The examination assesses the heel prominence, Achilles tendon, ankle flexibility, and footwear pressure. Weight-bearing X-rays help evaluate bone shape and calcification.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Shoe modification
- Heel lifts and padding
- Stretching and physical therapy
- Temporary immobilization
- Removal of the prominence with tendon treatment when indicated
