Understanding achilles rupture

An Achilles rupture often occurs during a sudden push-off, jump, or change of direction. Some patients hear or feel a pop and then notice weakness or difficulty walking.

Common signs and symptoms

  • A sudden pop behind the ankle
  • Difficulty pushing off
  • Weakness or an altered gait
  • Bruising and swelling

What to expect during evaluation

Evaluation includes tests of tendon continuity and calf function. Ultrasound or MRI may help define the location, gap, and tendon quality when treatment decisions require more detail.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Early protective immobilization
  • Functional rehabilitation
  • Nonsurgical treatment for selected patients
  • Primary tendon repair
  • Reconstruction for chronic or complex tears
When to seek prompt care: A sudden pop with new weakness or inability to push off should be evaluated promptly.
