Understanding sports injuries
Sports injuries can involve bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, or muscle. Treatment should address both healing and the demands of the athlete's activity.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain during or after activity
- Swelling or bruising
- Reduced speed or push-off
- Recurrent symptoms with training
What to expect during evaluation
Evaluation considers the sport, training changes, mechanics, strength, stability, and precise pain pattern. Imaging is selected based on the suspected structure.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Training modification
- Bracing or immobilization
- Physical therapy
- Orthotics when mechanics contribute
- Surgical repair when required for recovery
