Understanding gout

Gout often affects the big-toe joint but can involve the ankle and other foot joints. A red, hot, swollen joint can resemble infection, so correct diagnosis matters.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Sudden severe joint pain
  • Redness and warmth
  • Marked swelling
  • Extreme tenderness

What to expect during evaluation

Evaluation considers the timing, affected joint, medications, medical history, and possible infection. Laboratory testing, imaging, or joint aspiration may be recommended.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory treatment
  • Temporary rest and protection
  • Coordination for uric acid management
  • Diet and medication review with the medical team
  • Surgery for selected chronic deposits or joint damage
When to seek prompt care: Fever, an open wound, rapidly spreading redness, or systemic illness requires urgent evaluation because infection can resemble gout.
