Understanding midfoot arthritis

Midfoot arthritis can cause pain across the top or center of the foot, especially with standing and push-off. It may develop gradually or after a Lisfranc injury.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Pain across the midfoot
  • Swelling or a dorsal bump
  • Pain with push-off
  • Difficulty on stairs or uneven ground

What to expect during evaluation

Weight-bearing X-rays identify the involved joints and alignment. Selective injections or CT may help determine which joints are generating symptoms.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Stiff-soled footwear
  • Custom orthotics
  • Medication or injection
  • Activity modification
  • Fusion of painful arthritic joints when appropriate
