Foot infections can progress quickly, especially in patients with diabetes, neuropathy, or circulation problems. Treatment depends on depth, source, blood flow, and whether bone or deep tissue is involved.
Common signs and symptoms
- Spreading redness or warmth
- Drainage or pus
- Increasing swelling
- Fever or systemic illness
What to expect during evaluation
Evaluation includes the skin, wound depth, circulation, sensation, and systemic signs. X-rays, MRI, laboratory testing, and cultures may be required.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Antibiotic therapy
- Wound care
- Drainage or debridement
- Pressure relief
- Hospital or vascular coordination for severe cases
When to seek prompt care: Fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, gas in tissue, black discoloration, confusion, or systemic illness requires emergency evaluation.
