Understanding plantar warts
Plantar warts are caused by human papillomavirus and can spread through direct contact or contaminated surfaces. They can be confused with calluses, and pressure may push the lesion inward and make walking painful.
Common signs and symptoms
- A rough lesion on the sole
- Small dark dots
- Pain with side-to-side pressure
- Clusters of spreading lesions
What to expect during evaluation
The lesion is examined for skin-line changes and other features that distinguish a wart from a callus or another skin condition.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Topical keratolytic treatment
- Office-based destruction
- Immune-directed treatments for selected cases
- Pressure relief
- Biopsy when the diagnosis is uncertain
