Understanding fungal toenails
Toenail fungus can resemble nail trauma, psoriasis, and other nail disorders. Confirmation may be recommended before long-term medication.
Common signs and symptoms
- Thickened nails
- Yellow or white discoloration
- Brittle nail edges
- Pressure or pain in shoes
What to expect during evaluation
The nail pattern, skin, circulation, and medical history are reviewed. A nail sample may be obtained to confirm fungus.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Nail thinning and care
- Topical antifungal medication
- Oral antifungal medication when appropriate
- Footwear and hygiene guidance
- Management of associated athlete's foot
