Understanding ankle impingement
Ankle impingement occurs when soft tissue or bone is repeatedly compressed at the front or back of the ankle. It may follow sprains, repetitive sport, or arthritis.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pinching pain with ankle motion
- Loss of flexibility
- Pain with squatting or stairs
- Swelling after activity
What to expect during evaluation
The examination identifies the location and motion that reproduces pain. Weight-bearing X-rays and sometimes MRI help evaluate bone spurs, scar tissue, and cartilage injury.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Activity modification
- Physical therapy
- Bracing or footwear changes
- Injection when appropriate
- Arthroscopic or open debridement
