Understanding ankle arthritis
Ankle arthritis commonly develops after trauma but may also result from inflammatory disease or alignment problems. Treatment is based on pain, motion, alignment, and the amount of remaining cartilage.
Common signs and symptoms
- Deep ankle pain
- Stiffness and swelling
- Reduced walking tolerance
- Grinding or loss of motion
What to expect during evaluation
Standing examination and weight-bearing X-rays show joint-space loss and alignment. CT or MRI may be used for surgical planning or to evaluate remaining cartilage.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Activity and footwear modification
- Bracing
- Medication or injection
- Joint-preserving realignment when appropriate
- Ankle fusion or replacement for advanced disease
