Understanding foot fractures

Foot fractures vary widely in severity. Location, displacement, joint involvement, circulation, and activity needs determine whether protection alone or surgical stabilization is appropriate.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Focal bone pain
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Pain with weight-bearing
  • Change in shape or alignment

What to expect during evaluation

Weight-bearing or non-weight-bearing X-rays are selected based on the injury. CT or MRI may be recommended for complex, subtle, or stress-related fractures.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Protective footwear or a boot
  • Casting
  • Activity and weight-bearing restrictions
  • Serial imaging
  • Surgical fixation when alignment or joint stability requires it
When to seek prompt care: Seek prompt care for severe pain, deformity, an open wound, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, loss of sensation, or a cool or discolored foot.
