Understanding ankle instability
Ligaments may heal in a stretched position after repeated sprains, leaving the ankle mechanically unstable or poorly controlled. Cartilage and tendon injuries may also contribute to ongoing symptoms.
Common signs and symptoms
- Repeated ankle rolling
- A sense of giving way
- Pain on uneven ground
- Persistent swelling or weakness
What to expect during evaluation
Evaluation includes ligament testing, balance, strength, alignment, and review of prior injuries. Stress X-rays or MRI may be used to assess instability and associated cartilage or tendon damage.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Bracing
- Balance and strengthening therapy
- Footwear or orthotic support
- Activity modification
- Ligament repair or reconstruction
